Niles Education Foundation’s Legendary Evening to honor graduates Kenneth Brook and Scott Maurer

The Niles Education Foundation is kicking off its 2016-17 fundraising campaign with its Third Annual Legendary Evening at Orchard Hills Country Club at 6 p.m. Aug. 20.

This year the foundation will honor two Exemplary Vikings: Staff Sergeant Kenneth A. Brook and Dr. Scott H. Maurer.

June 30, 2016: Niles Education Foundation starting new year

Supporters of the Niles Education Foundation are receiving invitations in the mail this week for the Third Annual “Legendary Evening” fundraiser on Aug. 20, 2016. The NEF event at Orchard Hills Country Club is honoring “Exemplary Vikings Making a Difference” in their communities.

Recipients being honored at this year’s August event were nominated by their former Niles Community Schools’ teachers and administrators and staff. The Board of Trustees of the NEF made the final selections for the “Exemplary Vikings” honors. Their names will be announced in mid-July.

November 5, 2015: Niles students cook up Thanksgiving meal for area seniors

When guests say the only thing better than the food is the service, it makes for a good meal.

Culinary arts students from Niles High School garnered rave reviews for a Thanksgiving meal served to local seniors Wednesday morning at the Greater Niles Senior Center.

“It looks good, it smells good and what I’ve had so far tastes good,” said Eleanor Parker, who regularly eats lunch at the senior center. “The group serving it is extremely friendly and doing an excellent job.”

Approximately 30 students in grades 10th through 12th split into groups to either prepare, cook, serve or wait on the dozens of guests packed into the senior center’s eating area.

Culinary arts instructor Jayson Zoll said the students have been preparing for this day since last Thursday.

November 5, 2014: Niles Schools looking Wall of Fame Candidate

Niles Community Schools is making a renewed effort to find eligible candidates for the district’s Alumni Wall of Fame.

Located outside the high school auditorium, the Wall of Fame currently has just one member: famous 1960s musician Tommy James of Tommy James and The Shondells. The band’s classic single, “Mony Mony” reached number one of the U.K. Singles Chart in 1968.

Thursday, July 23, 2015 - The Niles Education Foundation is kicking off its 2015-2016 fundraising campaign with its second annual “Legendary Evening” at Orchard Hills Country Club on Saturday, August 22 beginning at 6 p.m. featuring Peg Parrott and music by the Sixth Generation, a nationally-acclaimed band made up of several Niles High School graduates from the 1960s.

Last year’s “Legendary Evening” was the Foundation’s first major fundraising event and thanks to the generosity of many local people, family foundations and local businesses, the Niles Education Foundation cleared $35,000!

June 4, 2014: Announcement of 2015 Projects

The Niles Education Foundation will award more than $16,000 to projects geared toward enhancing and enriching the learning environment in the Niles Community Schools.

Last month, the foundation chose six projects to fund out of a record number of 21 applications.

“I can’t tell you how excited we were to get 21 projects,” said Jane Brandstatter, of the education foundation. “That’s exciting for the district, although it makes it difficult for us to choose because we have limited funding.”

The Niles Education Foundation will hold its inaugural summer fundraising event, “A Gala Tribute to Viking Legends,” at 6 p.m. Aug. 23 at Orchard Hills Country Club.

It will be an evening of reminiscing good times with presentations made by former students, faculty and friends honoring former coach and athletic director Ed Weede and Peg Parrot, the former physical education teacher and long-time sponsor of the Niles Ushers Club.

Retired Administrator with Niles Community Schools joins Niles Education Foundation

February 28, 2014 – Niles, Michigan: No hall pass is required by Betty Perkins as she returns to Niles Community Schools with a new title: Trustee with the Niles Education Foundation. Even retirement couldn’t keep Perkins away from Niles Community Schools. Betty has an extensive background in education. She began her teaching career at Osterlein Home for Emotionally Disturbed Children in Springfield, Ohio. She went on to teach in Ashland, Ohio, at the Dale-Roy School for the Mentally Retarded and at Osbourne Elementary School.

Foundation focused on district’s future

The state’s budget issues seem to have become an unfortunate shadow for its education sector. From one district to the next, budget constraints, continual cuts in state funding and restrictions on some grant and federal funding options are a constant presence even when trying to focus on the positives.
